Wessex League 2007-8 "C" Team Match Reports

Maggie Wheeller reports:

On April 10 2008 the Summertown Bridge Team lost their match against Abingdon C.
As far as points were concerned we did not do well, losing 0 -20. However our friendliness,
calm attitude when things went slightly awry, and refreshments were all complimented!
Our team were:-

Maggie Wheeller and Jean Alexander

Paul Holland and Neil Whiting

Rosemary Dovey and Bob Francis

Paul Stevenson and Roger Heath-Brown

Many thanks to you all - especially Roger our scorer.

Some of us are going to the "improver" sessions - so who knows how we will do next season. The really good thing is that we enjoy it and I think that the same squad - with some more volunteers will want to play next season.

Special thanks to Jean who has organised the players so well, and Erica, Holly, Steph and Krys who have been particularly supportive.

Maggie Wheeller reports:

Well, on Thursday 27th March 2008 eight intrepid members went out into rural Oxfordshire to Blewbury. We took the pretty route via Clifton Hampden and Little Wittenham. Eventually we all found ourselves in a comfy room behind the Methodist Chapel. Unfortunately for us Blewbury, the Division leaders, continued their winning ways, and we had our biggest loss 0-20.

Players playing North/South had almost all the contracts.

Due to illness, holidays and other commitments, we had three scratch pairs. We all enjoyed it and our three new team players are all interested in playing next season. I scored for the first time and was pleased that both sides agreed the score quickly.

Our players were:
   Paul Stevenson and Chris Danziger
   Neil Whiting and Alison Withers-Green
   Bob Francis and Anna Rosenberg
   Jean Alexander and Maggie Wheeller

Many thanks to you all

Maggie Wheeller reports:

On March 3rd 2008 the Summertown "C" Team won their match against the Alternatives in Abingdon.

The first half we won 70 imps to 30,  the second half 89 to 19, overall 159 to 49.  So we ended up +110 imps.
As we were over 71 imps we won 20 - 0 in VPs.

Our team were:-
 Maggie Wheeller and Jean Alexander
 Paul Holland and Neil Whiting
 Rosemary Dorey and Bob Francis
 Paul Stevenson and Roger Heath-Brown

Many thanks to you all - especially Roger, our scorer, who not only fills in our score sheet, but also quietly checks and agrees
(sometimes following adjustments) the score with the opposition.

We obviously had many interesting hand with wild swings.  Hand 4 had both our East-Wests beating themselves up about getting 4 hearts plus 3 and not bidding the slam.  However our opponents who played this hand East - West both had part scores in clubs - so we were +1100 (15 imps) on the one hand.

West opened 1 NT, East bid 2 clubs (Stayman) West 2 Hearts, East 4 Hearts.  It played like a dream, turning into a nightmare of lost opportunities when we got all the tricks!

I do love teams - eventually we found (see above) that we did quite well.

So thanks again everyone - two more to play this season - see you then

Maggie

Holly Kilpatrick Reports:
The C Team put up a valiant fight against Oxford 'F' at the Oxford
Bridge Club last Thursday 17th January but came second with the very respectable
score of 13 - 7. This result has been finally agreed between the two
captains after a misboarded round. One pair put the incorrect number of
cards back which were then passed to another pair, from the opposing
team, who failed to count them. The 'C' Team captains, Maggie Wheeler
and Jean Alexander may be able to relate a hand or two but even if they
can't, I would like to thank them for getting this 'C' Team on the road
for the Summertown Bridge Club! I would also like to thank the
remainder of the team who turned out to play that night:

Paul Stevenson and Roger Heath-Brown

Neil Whiting and Sara Alden

Robert Gasser and Albert Eastham

Well done to all of you and a big thank you for your input in
establishing a third Summertown team!

Maggie Wheeller reports:
The "C" team had its second match on Thursday 29th November.  Again we lost 6 - 14, this time against
Wallingford.  We had hoped to do better, as at half time we were ahead by 6 IMPs,
but still lost overall. Again thanks to Roger for scoring, and all the team for finding the
venue in the middle of the Oxfordshire countryside.  It was great fun.
The team were:
Maggie Wheeller  and Jean Alexander
Neil Whiting and Sara Alden
Bob Francis and Rosemary Dorey
Roger Heath Brown and Paul Stevenson
Next match is in January

Holly Kilpatrick reports: Another chapter in the club's history was made last night when
the 'C' Team turned out to play their first match of the season against Wantage "B"
This is the first time that the club has fielded three teams successfully,
and the 'C''s look to be heading for an exciting first season.
As one of their team captains said "we were second" but hey ho, a respectable second with 14 - 6VPs.
What is far more important is that all concerned really enjoyed themselves and, indeed, the whole experience;
for some their first Wessex League match.
So, thank you Maggie and Jean and thank you so much to all the team for contributing to the club's history:

Paul Stevenson and Roger Heath Brown
Bob Francis and Rosemary Dorey
Robert Gasser and Paul Holland
Jean Alexander and Maggie Wheeller
